Other than his struggle to make it in the music business, the characters in LUCK seem to be ordinary people. So, the movie doesn't hurt anyone's feelings by poking fun at their foibles. Perhaps the thing that makes LUCK so interesting is that the characters seem very much on the same level as the audience; there is no mistaking that these guys are three guys who were never meant to be together; they simply lucked into being in the same group.
There is one exception to this rule: in the third act, the main character, the singer Lurie (Billy Bob Thornton), is accidentally left behind on a desert island. The three remaining guys soon realize that they couldn't survive without him, and think of him as their father. One of the delights of any movie is to see the ordinary people in a movie being kind to one another -- whether they're on an island together or back in the mean streets of something like The Big Lebowski. This love never pulls its punches, and it's refreshing to see an ensemble cast handle the leading role.)
Parents need to know that the main character, Sam Greenfield, is a heroine who has been knocked around foster homes for her entire life. During the movie, the women in the cast all wear very short skirts and tight, revealing tops -- which is actually the point. Some of the characters are downright mean and rude to one other. None of the women, however, are shown in women's underwear.
It follows in the tradition of FOOD, JOHNNY EXPANDO, and THE EXORCIST, i.e., the *only* practice that would be possible in a Boyle County, Indiana where every streamway is flanked by cornfields and nobody ever notices anything. Despite the company's self-proclaimed connection to the cast of THE GRUMBERS, this movie has one outrageous twist the audience should probably see coming from several miles away.
